Museum Tours

All groups wishing to visit the museum are required to schedule their visit in advance. To maximize availability and give us time to tailor a tour to your needs, we request that you contact the museum's Public Programs department at (603)669-6144, extension 113 at least one month in advance of the tour date you are requesting. The information below will help you in planning your visit to the museum.

Guided Tours
Tours led by volunteer museum guides can be scheduled Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The museum is closed to the public on Tuesdays. Tours generally last one hour unless other arrangements are made. Groups that arrive late cannot be guaranteed a full hour visit.

Tour Topics
Introduction to the Museum - This tour provides a general introduction to The Currier Gallery of Art and its permanent collection of European and American painting, sculpture and decorative arts.

Special exhibitions - The museum hosts 4-5 special exhibitions each year, with guided and self-guided tours available.

Thematic tours - Tours that link topics studied in the classroom with the museum's collection can often be created. In the past, tour topics have included American art, European art, Modern art, Portraiture, Women artists, and New Hampshire history. For the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Zimmerman House, theme tour topics have included geometry and nature. Teachers are invited to call and explore the possibilities.

Self-Guided Tours
A "self-guided" tour is led by the visiting group's educator or leader, rather than by a volunteer museum guide. Self-guided groups should schedule their visit one month in advance. If a group arrives without a scheduled appointment, there is no guarantee that there will be space in the museum to accommodate it.

Group Size
To ensure a quality museum experience, a maximum of 60 students can be accommodated at any one time. A more limited group size is required for Zimmerman House tours, some thematic tours, self-guided tours and tours of special exhibitions.

Fees and Payment
The fee for guided museum tours is $25 per group, per day. The fee for self-guided tours is $15 per group, per day. Payment is expected before or at the time of the tour. Checks should be made payable to The Currier Gallery of Art.

Appropriate Museum Behavior
While the museum displays works of art so visitors can enjoy and learn from them, it is also responsible for preserving the art for future generations. Therefore, the museum requires that all visitors observe a few key rules, such as not touching works of art and using only pencils when writing in the galleries. A list of the museum rules is sent to each group that schedules a tour. Teachers and chaperones must review these rules with students before visiting the museum.

Teachers and Chaperones
On guided tours, one teacher or adult chaperone is required for every 10 students visiting the museum's galleries. For self-guided tours, one teacher or adult chaperone is required for every seven students. All members of the group must wear name tags. Teachers and chaperones are responsible for maintaining discipline and must remain at all times with the students they are supervising.
